Chinese farmers have a long history and rich experience in producing and using organic fertilizers. Throughout the long history of agricultural production in China, organic fertilizers have been relied upon to improve soil quality, enhance soil fertility, and produce food, nurturing generations of our Chinese nation. This shows that organic fertilizers played a more important role in agricultural production at that time.
After the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China, the fertilizer industry in China developed and the use of fertilizers increased year by year. In the 1950s and 1960s, organic fertilizers still played a guiding role in agricultural production, with organic fertilizers being the main form of fertilizer application and chemical fertilizers as a supplement. In 1965, organic fertilizer accounted for 80.7% of the total fertilizer input. In the 1970s, Chinas fertilizer industry developed rapidly. From 1971 to 1980, the production increased from 2.994 million tons (nutrients) to 12.321 million tons. The proportion of organic fertilizers has decreased, accounting for 66.4% of the total fertilizer input. In 1987, the total output of fertilizers reached 16.122 million tons, with an average of 27.8 kilograms of fertilizers applied per mu. The proportion of chemical fertilizers in the total fertilizer input has greatly increased, with nitrogen nutrients accounting for more than organic fertilizers. However, organic fertilizers still dominate the supply of phosphorus and potassium nutrients.
The nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in organic fertilizers are only a small but important part of organic fertilizers, and the vast majority of organic fertilizers are organic matter. Organic matter is an important indicator of soil fertility. Even though nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium nutrients will mainly be provided by fertilizers in the future, organic fertilizers will still play a significant role in improving soil and enhancing soil fertility.
In summary, organic fertilizers not only play a very important role in agricultural production in China, but also have significant implications for protecting the ecological environment and peoples health.
